I may have been born in the year 1995, but I can’t call myself a “90s kid”. I honestly don’t remember anything vivid enough to call a “substantial memory” from the 90s *sad face*. However, if someone were to ask me to pick a decade I would love to live my youth in, I’d pick the this decade.
I love looking back at old photographs and seeing what my parents and aunts used to wear during the 90s. Having very young parents, they’ve also introduced me to music popular in the 90s. My own dad being an avid fan of Nirvana and Oasis. Watching My Mad Fat Diaries (a show set during the 90s) probably boosted my interest in this decade as well. The show made me love how cellphones weren’t even that popular yet and how getting in touch with a person took more effort than it does today. To me, this decade was the borderline between the simplicity of life then and the life we are familiar with now.
I guess I love how the fashion during this decade falls more on the edgy side but at the same time having an undertone of that “laid back look”. I think that the laid back look is also a reflection of the “grunge” or alternative rock music loved by this decade. The 90s is surely a contrast to the lively colors popular during the 80s.
My favorite fashion pieces during this decade would definitely be the high waisted denim shorts, flannel tops, combat boots and crop tops.
I T R I E D to incorporate the 90s in what I wore during the Bruno Mars concert last March 22, 2014 (my birthday)…. Okay, so maybe not. Honestly, the entire 90s inspiration was unintentional. I bought a turtle neck top for a particular reason (in which I do not want to discuss in this blog), and I bought this light denim wash high waisted shorts just because I’ve been loving high waisted bottoms and I lacked one in this shade. Put those two garments together, and you get this:
So seeing this look put together, I guess it’s a 90’s inspired look with a modern twist? The boots may not be combat boots, but they’re black and they’re boots, so it still gives that edginess combat boots can give a look. Turtle necks seem to be a thing of the past, and so incorporating that in this look also throws this look back by two decades (hehe).
